1999 Chevy Tahoe 5.7 engine hoist clearance
Hi guys!
My Chevy engine have gone down the hill and needs an engine rebuild/replacement along with the transmission. However I'm not sure what engine hoist to get so that I am sure to be able to pull out the engine and transmission. It just seems to be too tall for the hoist to clear the front of the car. The car seems to sit a little higher due to larger wheels, but I'm not sure. I'd appreciate any advice on this matter since I will soon get to that point in the project.
Thanks!

Welcome to TF. Have you checked out the ones like at Harbor Freight. I used one like that when I pulled th engine w/ tranny from my Corvette with the car up on ramps. Had plenty of height w/ the boom fully extended.

That one should be fine, but it's 2-3 times more expensive than regular cherry picker ones.

I measured the height of the front of the car yesterday and it's about 45 inches high. A cherry picker at Harbour Freight says it lifts 103 inches maximum. To me that seems to work on paper
I also noticed how far back the transmission goes. Won't the trans drop down when you disconnect the driveshaft? Would you need to support it untill you lift engine & trans up and out?

No, I was using the cherry picker type (usually about $150 @ Harbor Freight).
Usually the tranny tail shaft is supported by a cross-member. You will also need an engine tilter/leveler cuz when you pull engine/tranny as assy, you'll need to tilt the front of the engine up as you lift in order to clear the front of the truck. Probably have to pull radiator.

I just ordered the Northern Tool cherry picker for about $160 + $120 in shipping. Seemed like that was the "cheapest" one compared to Summit and Harbor.

I'm guessing that you don't have a Harbor Freight nearby?

Don't know if these are close: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta..._stores.taf#MD
You can haul it in your Tahoe as it comes knocked down in two or three boxes. Anyway good luck on your project.

Just an update:
My Northern Tool lift worked great for the job. I also got a hold of a book from Dr. Waba by SDParts.com where the chevy 350 small block removal on trucks or pickups is pictured and explained in great details. It's $150 for the two books (Removal and Reinstall) but definately worth it if you are a little unsure as I am (was).
