Default Disable Headlight sensor 2000 Chevy Silverado

I would like to permanently disable the automatic headlight sensing system on my 2000 Chevy Silverado. Simply put, I want to use the switch for on/off operation. All other lights must work as designed; I don't want any collateral failures as a result of a modification. Thanks for any help that's available.

I think the sensor is mounted on the dash by the defroster vent. Would you get any errors by simply cutting the wires? I am not sure exactly how this sensor works so not posative. That is just my first guess. Or, is there a fuse for this sensor?

I don't believe it's as simple as cutting some wires. I sat with a certified GM electrical specialist pondering over wiring diagrams and the circuitry is apparentlydesigned to prevent intervention as was suggested by cutting the two wires. In other words, other systems would be affected by that procedure.

In the 'infinite wisdom' of GM's attitude of taking care of us whether we need it or not, they have taken a decision making process away from us with this 2000 Silverado. I find myself being rude to others, bright-lighting them with no control of my headlights. Can you even imagine trying to use this truck as a hunting vehicle? How could you turn the lights out when approaching your duck blind? This design concept goes far beyond any ideas of safety, as there are running lights for daytime operation!

For addingman99: There is a fuse which protects this particular headlight sensorcircuitry; problem is, thatthis fuseprotects other needed circuits, also.

Welcome to the forum!!! So, the only thing the headlight switch controls is the automatic lights which truns the headlights (and others) on a off when the outside light changes? In my car the switch has three positions, off, on, and auto. Gm didn't design it that way?

In the daytime with sufficient light, the headlight switch has three functions: off; parking; headlights. On dull dreary days or at night the switch has no function at all - it doesn'tcontrol anything. Thanks for the welcoming! I only screwed up once here today as a new member, but that won't happen again.

Quick question: why does my status indicate 'offline' when I'm sending messages to the forum? Is 'online' a different section of this website that I don't know about?

it figures.

on the pannel for your headlights is there a button. If so pushing that button 4 times (i think) will at least temporArily disable it. I believe as soon as you turn the vehicle off than on again you would have to do it again.

There is this dome button override feature on certain models of the 2000 Silverado which is only a temporary fix. I don't have the feature on my model Chevy. In any event, I'm looking for a permanent change and elimination of this whole stupid configuration in my truck. Thanks for your interest!
