Fuel gauge 2000 Astro
the fuel gauge never drops below 3/4 full or more even when near empty. seems to read correct when totally full.
Any ideas where the problem is? Hope to not have to replace the fuel pump. Thanks.

it sounds like the float in the tank is stuck. you may get lucky and try hitting the bottom of the tank and knock it loose or you may have to take it out of the tank and fix it. hope this helps.

RE: Fuel gauge 2000 Astro
Tried the hammer thing but didn't seem to work. One thing I noticed is the gauge is bouncing around when in park or with engine off but key on. In drive it stabilizes to the mostly full reading. I guess I can drop the tank and take a look next.
an internet search seems to turn up a lot of fuel gauge problems with GM vehicles around this year and most involve replacing the fuel sending unit which is only sold with the fuel pump. I have 140K+ miles so maybe it is time to go that route?

i would say mabye get a used sending unit but if more then less seam to have the same problem it might be a risk. other then that if you have to drop the tank to look it may be worth just puting in the new unit.
