I have a 2000 Suburban 2500 4x4 with 166,000 miles and need to do an oil change. This will be the first one I have done on it since it had the rear oil seal repaired and had the shop do the change. I just wanted to know if going to synthetic is ok or recommended due to the high miles or should I go with something else? I just want to do it right since I heard these motors will go a long time with regular oil changes and using the right oil. Alos it said the capacity is 6 quts. Is that correct?

What's "it"? If the owner's manual, then it's correct.

I'd stick w/ regular oil. Synthetic should be OK but why give the shop an excuse if the rear main seal starts to leak again?

At the point in the engines life if synthetic has not been used then the ship has pretty much sailed. Synthetic reduces engine wear so at 160,000 if it has not had syn then there wear is there. Use a good quality 5w-30 conventional oil and it should still run for a long time as long as it has been maintained properly. If you have been using syn the keep using it there was never a reason to stop. At work if you use syn then we put syn in no matter what gasket or seal we just replaced

I have an 07 Tahoe with about 95k on it. This will be my frist oil change since I purchased it last month so I don't know the oil history as if synthetic has ever been used. My question is should I just go with regular oil being this high mileage or is it ok to switch to synthetic? I mentioned to the service guy at the dealership and he said to use regular but I wanted to get your opinions. Thanks

IMHO I'd say 95k is still pretty low mileage, if you are a fan of synthetic I'd say go with it and use it from now on....

I'd monitor consumption after changing for the first time (for you). Then use whatever proper weight and grade of what's in the owner's manual.

I use synthetic cuz I do my own changes and don't have to do them as often.

I ran Valvoline 10-30 in my 94 from new until this June when I traded it off. Ran their high mileage stuff after about 150K miles. Traded it off because my 17 year 300,000 mile warranty was just about up. Never had a motor issue and never blew any oil. Good truck. Better than the 2010 I replaced it with IMO.
