I've got a 2005 Tahoe that has over the last few months developed a clunking sound that sounds like it's coming from the left rear of the truck. The noise only happens when I'm coming to a stop (15mph or less) and when I'm accelerating from a stop. I've had the truck looked at by 2 separate mechanics and neither can reproduce the noise. The clunking happens very sporadically, could happen 5 times in a day or once in 5 days.

Please help as this is driving me crazy.

search the forum for slip yoke most likely its dry, very common

Thanks...that is one of the things I've narrowed it down to. If it is dry could the sound come and go with no specific way to reproduce it? The noise does sound like it is getting louder and louder.

usually a firm stop will produce the sound and clunk may even feel like someone has bumped into you when you let off the brakes....

How loud would the noise be? It sounds like a loud vibration and once you come to a complete stop and start going again it won't make the noise. It Has never felt like someone bumped me.

Without being there only so much troubleshooting can be done via the net
It may not be the slip yoke, however I would suggest having the slip yoke lubricated and go from there, it certainly won't hurt anything to have it done and it also gives you an opportunity to inspect and or replace the U-joints while your there... if the symptoms are still present afterwards you will know what its not... I know that sounds rather shootgun-ish but if you have had it in the shop and they have not be able to find anything its probably the best route to try....

Consider some other items to check:

• pull off the rear wheels and inspect the rear brakes for proper fit and ware of pads and calipers

• Check the rear shocks mounting grommets and bolts
• Check all exhaust mounts
• Check exhaust for rub marks or other contact marks to the frame or body
• Check the rear leaf springs and shackles for wear and fit

Thanks for the replies. One thing I did notice is that sometimes after I hit a bump, pot hole at low speeds it will begin to make the noise. Also, once I speed up to 20mph or greater the noise goes away.

Thoughts?

My 2005 Tahoe has same sounds. I took a ride with a Mechanic today. Sound seems to be coming from the drivers side rear body Mount. He said to loosen the mount and spray lube it, then tighten back down,
