Default 1956 Chevy 235 won't start

I just bought a 1937 Chevy pick-up with a 1956 235 in it. It was driven on the trailer. When I received it, I started it after it was rolled off the trailer. It ran for a couple of minutes and died. Now it won't restart. I have checked the timing, replaced the points, plugs and condensor. Cap and rotor are good. I checked to see if the valves were sticking, all OK. I checked to see if the float was sticking, also OK.It won't start and backfires thru the carb. It won't even start with gas poured in the carb. Any suggestions?
